A number of years ago at an artists residency in an outdoor sculpture museum and park near Vilnius, Lithuania I observed a group of employees from a furniture factory practicing bonding and trusting exercises with a facilitator. The employees were all blindfolded during this exercise and did everything they were told to do blindfolded. I thought it was fun to watch and took many photos. When I returned home and looked at the photos they began to take on a more sinister or political connotation, especially knowing the very problematic history of Lithuania.

This gouache portrait painting originates from what I call "blind drawing". In order to make a blind drawing I place the surface (canvas or paper) on which I will eventually paint, out of my line of sight but close enough to be able to draw on it. I then look at the model or person sitting for the portrait and draw everything I see including all the lines and crevices without looking at the surface on which I am drawing. I continue to draw this way without lifting my pencil and try to make a continuous line to complete the image. If I must lift my pencil off the surface I do not look at where I place it and try to feel where it should go. In this way I try to capture the "essence" or character of the person. After the drawing is complete, I paint the work in whatever medium I have chosen. Of course I look when I am painting.

I fell in love with this valley over 30 years ago when I first saw it. I have photographed it many times, but this day was and probably will remain in my mind always as the most beautiful day ever for it.

North of Skye the village of Plocton and its harbor ... This image represents much of what brings me to the North Atlantic ... a union of land, sea, and sky ... this balance of the human hand in the small boats and houses shows a respect for it all. ... Perhaps something from the past but a lesson for now and always.

This image shows the incredible varying light refected deep into these canyons. The different colors are all due to the different angles of rock walls and how the sunlight is reflected into them. The colors are constantly changing by the minute during the day.

This spectacular sky and light welcomed me following a vist with a local cheese maker nearby on his Alpage. For centuries this small chapel has been a retreat for the the travellers. Located in a Col or Mountain pass it is one of the many passages between valleys.

When I first came across this beach in the early 80's it was much less known and usually fog or mist enshrouded. The clarity of this day is rather unique, revealing the great stone towers like some primeval stone forest.
