Our show, 21st Century Multiples, begins this weekend and features one of our amazing artists, Yanni Glykokokalos. Below is a bit of his work including a painting entitled “Gaia” and a corresponding story called “Maria.” Please enjoy and we hope to see you at the show!
Maria
She lived on Avenue B and 6th Street. Her name was Maria and she modeled for artists, waitressed and cleaned houses to make ends meet. She liked to smoke pot while modeling and eat peanut butter and honey sandwiches when she took breaks. I asked about her life and history but all she ever told me was that if I really knew her, it would spoil my drawings. She always insisted on mystery.
“Make your own stories about me, then your drawings will all be different,” she said. “Paint me as a lady, high priestess or barmaid but always remember I am a woman”!
As if I could think of her as anything but a woman, I thought.
After a half an hour of silence, she said, “Yanni, one more thing, my name isn’t Maria. So you can paint a Susan, Kate, Pauline or the unknown model.” read more…

We are currently running an amazing show by Koval Grippo, called The Wisdom and Power of Nature. In order to give you some more insight into Grippo as an artist, we asked her a few questions. This is what she had to say:
Get more information about her on our site and her own website at http://www.kovalgrippo.us/
1. Did you always know you wanted to create your art?
Yes, since I was a little kid, I was always drawing, amazed with colors and staring into the sky.
2. How did you get interested in it?
Just following my desire.
3. What about creating your work do you find so appealing?
Great question! Well there are so many levels that are appealing, but I think the one that makes me selfishly smile the most is that creative energy that happens between the colors, the brush and myself….the movement, just flowing in an amazing state of the moment. It’s euphoric actually……it kind of takes you to that secret place where prayers go. I try to live there as much as possible.
4. How has your vision changed over time? read more…
